You change the oil in your car every 3,000 miles or so, and clean your house  often. Your PC needs regular maintenance as well, especially if you're using Microsoft Windows and you spend a lot of time on the Internet.

I have a checklist I follow to keep your computer tuned. The steps may differ slightly, depending on your operating system and hardware configuration.

1. System Resources check.
2. Review your Startup Programs – Remove unnecessary startup programs.
3. Clean out your Windows\temp directory.
4. Uninstall old applications (software programs)
5. Folders, documents & files cleanup.
6. Empty your browser's cache.
7. Empty the Recycle Bin.
8. ScanDisk cleans your hard drive of the miscellaneous errors caused by software conflicts.
9. Defrag Your computer so programs run faster..
10. Update your operating system - Windows update.
11. Check Firewall and antivirus software.

Diagnostics:

1. Profile and document your computers hardware configuration and software versions.
2. Check for software & hardware conflicts.
3. Ram memory test – upgrade if necessary!
4. System debug - update if necessary!
5. Modem, video, sound, and driver test - update if necessary!
6. Viruses scan and clean!

Hardware maintenance:

1. Inspect and clean CPU power supply fan!
2. Check all cables, make sure fully connected and clean!
3. Check and clean if necessary all drives, Floppy, CD, DVD, USB!
4. Check and clean dip switches!
5. Check remount and secure main board and peripherals if necessary!
6. Check and clean all dust internal!
7. Clean all external surfaces CPU box Monitor, Printer, Keyboard!

After initial full maintenance, I will recommend any updates or upgrades you may need. If a monthly maintenance is scheduled, the computer profile and documentation will be used to check any changes that may have cause problems.

The profile also helps me understand problems during phone conversations or emails.
